Embodied liberation

Ever wondered why thinkers like Erich Fromm and Herbert Marcuse, who wrote during the mid-20th century, remain so relevant today? Their insights into the vulnerabilities of free societies to totalitarianism and the critical importance of individual psyche in resisting the allure of submission to authoritarian leaders or regimes continue to resonate deeply.

Today, we witness a resurgence of right-wing nationalism and the rise of authoritarian leaders who undermine democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law. From Vladimir Putin to Victor Orban, Donald Trump to Xi Jinping, we see democratic principles under siege. In addition, there is an uncomfortable blindness towards economic exploitation such as the overpayment of pharmaceutical companies for COVID-19 vaccines and how the recent energy crisis benefited energy corporations at the expense of people at risk of poverty.

Fromm’s ideas, penned in his 1941 work “Escape from Freedom,” are as pertinent as ever:

“Modern man is still anxious and tempted to surrender his freedom to dictators of all kinds, or to lose it by becoming a mere cog in the machine, well-fed and well-clothed, yet not a free man but an automaton.”

“The majority of men have not yet acquired the maturity to be independent, rational, or objective. They need myths and idols to cope with the fact that man is ultimately alone, finding meaning in life only through their own agency.”

“Freedom, while offering independence and rationality, has also led to isolation and anxiety. Faced with this, individuals are compelled to either seek refuge in new dependencies or strive for the full realization of positive freedom, rooted in uniqueness and individuality.”

These words resonate today, highlighting the imperative for not just awareness but actionโ€”a practice of embodied liberation. It calls us to confront our fears and inhibitions, challenge limiting narratives, resist oppressive structures, and delve deeply into the essence of our minds.
